Is Mineral Water Healthy - Truth or Myth
• By Daniel Woods •
“What is your favorite drink”? If you ask this question, I am sure over 80% of the people will answer – mineral water. Same might be true for you as well. But do you really know what mineral water is? Is mineral water healthy? Read on to find out the truth.
As is evident from the name, mineral water is a water containing minerals. The water available in natural springs is usually rich in minerals and other element traces. The quality of water is evaluated by evaporating it and measuring the content of minerals in it. The water containing over 250 parts per million (ppm) of a mineral substance is named mineral water.
Many bottled water companies claim that the water that they are providing is mineral water. The truth is that usually this water is available in natural springs in areas where it is not even possible to go. Not all the companies are doing the good work of really bottling up the pure and clean water containing minerals.
Some bottled waters are in fact nothing better than what comes out of our taps. This water is highly contaminated with chemical and organic impurities and can never be placed in the category of mineral water. Using such water is not recommended. A home water purifier should be used instead.
Some water purifiers, specially the ones which are based on the principle of reverse osmosis, provide clean and pure water rich in minerals. This is a myth. The truth is that these purifiers simply strip out everything from the water. The water that is produced by these filters is free from impurities but it is de-mineralized too! All the essential minerals from the water have been removed. Consuming such water is not recommended as it eventually leads to mineral deficiencies.
Is mineral water healthy? Indeed. This is the truth. The minerals present in the water like sodium, calcium, magnesium and iron, they are very important for the general health of our body. Drinking natural mineral water (h2o) is the best way to ensure daily intake of these minerals.
Calcium is required for maintaining the strength of bones, teeth and cartilage. Magnesium helps in maintaining muscular and nervous equilibrium. Iron is important in building up hemoglobin, the oxygen carrier in our blood. Iodine regulates the growth of thyroid gland. All these minerals are healthy and are very much required.
A school of thought recommends this water for skin and hair too. This is true. There is, however, one problem - while taking a shower, the pores of the skin open up and they absorb the contaminants in the water. These contaminants have detrimental effects on skin and hair. Using a good shower filter helps in ensuring that these contaminants are not absorbed in the skin.
Additionally the minerals present in this filtered water enhance the health of skin and hair – not only from outside but from inside too. Moisturizing the skin from clean and pure mineral water keeps the skin moist, soft and healthy.
In conclusion, the answer to the question – ‘Is mineral water healthy?’ is Yes. It is healthy not only for the overall health of our body but for our skin and hair too.
Give it a try. Look out for a good water purifier which can purify the water and retain the essential minerals in it. Taste the clean and pure water with neccesary minerals. Apart from good taste and smell, I am sure you will notice its other benefits too.
